Helios

Thousands of years ago, back during the height of the Silver Millennium, there existed on Earth a powerful object known as the Golden Crystal. This crystal was an energy amplification device, one that could magnify the energy of human dreams or human nightmares and that was potentially more powerful than the stars themselves. The rulers of Earth placed this sacred treasure in Elysium, the metaphysical realm formed from the dreams of all humans.

At the shrine where the stone, was held a young boy named Helios was placed to serve as keeper and protector of the stone. His sole duty was to keep the existence of the Golden Crystal a secret and to protect it from those who would abuse its power. One day, a bitter queen from a minor asteroid colony came to his shrine to ask for the crystal, but when the power of the crystal rejected her she returned to her world in defeat. Soon after, she was sealed away by the power of Queen Serenity in the shadow of the moon.

One day, presumably sometime after the fall of the Moon Kingdom, the world of Elysium was invaded by the forces of the selfsame dark queen, Nehelenia. Calling themselves the Dead Moon Circus, the evil forces quickly conquered the once bright and happy world, covering it in darkness and thick webs of nightmare. Helios himself was captured by Nehelenia, who imprisoned his body in a web of sorcery and began to try and coerce the Golden Crystal from him. Helios was unable to escape, but seeing a far distant light of a beautiful dream, his soul escaped his body in the form of a pegasus and retreated to the human world.

Helios is a very reserved individual. He takes his duty extremely seriously, unwilling to reveal his true mission to even his most trusted confidants. He is also very altruistic, willing to put himself in danger to aid those in need. He is dedicated to protecting the beautiful dreams of all humans, a task he sees not only as his destiny, but as his one deep pleasure. Helios is even willing to forgive those who trespass against him and show mercy to the darkest villians who seek it.

Helios himself possesses few magical powers. In the land of dreams he appears as a tall, beautiful pegasus and he can manipulate the dreams of those he is near. He can exist in the real world only as an illusion, with no real substance or ability to effect the world. On his brow in both forms is a golden horn, the symbolic home of the Golden Crystal. He can grant the strength of the crystal to those he finds worthy, greatly amplifying their innate power. The light of the Golden Crystal also dispels illusions and harmful magic, though whether this is an innate power of the crystal or an aspect of Helios' use of it is not quite explained. It is also strongly hinted that the Golden Crystal can turn dreams into reality. It can certainly cause dream-like things to happen.
