Yomiko Readman is the nineteenth paper master in service to the British Library Special Operations Division, code name "The Paper", a fact she is generally only peripherally aware of. Yomiko was raised in a home full of literature, was taught to read at a young age and grew up loving books. The fact that she is a paper master, and can experience books in an almost sensual manner that normal humans can not, only helped. Yomiko is perhaps one of the most skilled paper masters in history, but only joined the British Library after her boyfriend, Tony Nakajima the eighteenth paper master, vanished (presumed dead).
Yomiko is a bibliophile. She devours books with a ferocity that unnerves most people. She spends every bit of her income on books, even what she should be saving for things like rent and food, and lives in a four story building packed wall-to-ceiling with them. She is so well known in Tokyo's book markets that the shop keepers there have come to base a lot of their business on her alone. Yomiko pays very little attention to anything besides her current book, but when you can drag her away from reading she comes across as a very cheerful, eager young woman with a genuine love of life and friendship. She likes to work as a teacher, and she is fiercely loyal to her friends. While she is unfailingly polite, those who harm her friends or get between her and a book she hasn't read - or worse, both - will see that she is an implacable enemy.
Yomiko's powers are very highly developed even for a paper master. She can control paper with the skill of a surgeon, bending, folding and shaping it like a master of oragami but purely with the power of her will. The limits of her ability to shape paper seem to be solely in her mind, as she can create anything she imagines. She can harden paper to the point it can withstand bullets and high-yield explosions, and sharpen the edges of paper to the point it will easily cut through steel. She needs to make some contact with paper to perform this, but once she does she can direct the paper remotely, forming complex models or commanding paper to retain an unnatural form for extended periods from a distance as well. The main limits of paper mastery is that the medium is still paper. It burns, it becomes useless if wet and (strangely) certain frequencies of sound can disrupt her control over it. Without paper, Yomiko is rather limited. She has almost superhuman reflexes, but well within normal human strength and stamina. She also has no formal training in combat, and acts mostly on instinct and what she learned from her former lover.
