Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not one of those curmudgeons longing for the days of fansubs, where anime was something special, exotic, just for us. Fuck that. Give me hilariously edited anime on TV, give me virtually every anime worth watching translated, dubbed and put on DVD, give me mainstream penetration to the point where Marvel does their own "manga" which is in fact actually worse than the "Christian manga" which came out, give me faint hope that some day they'll bring out Violinist of Hameln, and all that jazz. It sucked being an anime fan in 1995 compared to now, and anyone who tells you different is a dick.
But things were different then. I reflect upon this, now, as I finally put up these caps. I actually did them awhile back when the DVD first came out, but the amount of Photoshopping to get them looking half-decent was extensive, as is usual for Ranma screencaptures (though better than the ones I did from season 3!). The Miss Beachside episode, back in the day, was legendary. It was an episode in the very very late series, back when that looked impossibly far away and semi-mythical to people waiting for the next two episodes of Anything Goes Martial Arts to come out. It was animated by the Movie 2 animation team, and even back then, we knew that was special because frankly, the TV series had already devolved into largely looking like ass. It had the return of TSUBASA! Wow! We hadn't even gotten to the FIRST appearence of Tsubasa yet! Most of us had only seen him in Movie 1 and Tendo Family Christmas Scramble, which partially explains the plethora of characters in fanfiction that were named "Tsubasa Kurenai" but were written by people who obviously had seen nothing more than a crappy synopsis of his appearence. When some shitty screencaptures of it popped up, people oohed and ahhed over them. Would we ever see this glorious thing for ourselves? The end of the Ranma anime seemed so far away!
And here we are, with the anime having been fully released for some time. I didn't even notice any excitement when the episode finally came out, but then, I didn't expect it - the star of Ranma, as I said before, had dimmed. Tons of other people have the episode by now, but I'm pretty sure even after ignoring them for two and a half years, I'm still the first to have a real gallery of caps from it. Instead of the rec.arts.anime newsgroup beating a breathless race to my door for these glistening gems of imagery, there's about half a dozen of you at most, and probably all you care about is the giant Movie 2-ish tits.
Well, you know, that's fine too. Enjoy your tits! Be thankful for the one that doesn't have any - the only reason I capped it was for Tsubasa, really. I mean, geez, did you look at Ukyou's swimsuit? Eeeyuck.
