Variable Geo is a classic example of something growing beyond it's origins. Originally born as a series of computer games in the height of the 2D fighting game craze spawned by Street Fighter, V.G. was a fairly thin fighting game with the main draw being that after every successful match, the player would get to see H pictures of the girl (all the fighters were female, natch) they'd beaten.
It certainly wasn't the only game with that basic premise; however, unlike many of the others, there was some actual craft and effort put into the game. The art (including the non-H art) was quite good, and the girls all had actual personalities and endings that had nothing to do with getting naked. As well, the actual game, while certainly not cutting edge 2D fighting, was still actually PLAYABLE, which by the standards of H games is still pretty good.
Probably due to these characteristics, the game proved more popular than most of its ilk, and thus got ported to several console systems, with a few enhancements and one notable difference: no H scenes. When the games did fairly well even without their putative selling point, sequels were in the offing. But without porn to make an easy draw, the future games concentrating on deepening the storyline and characterisations, and even *gasp* making the engine into a fairly respectable fighting game. This proved to be a successful formula, with an OAV series (available from ADV, by the way) eventually in the offing, and finally rebounded back on the computer games, one of the later ones (VG Max) actually being a pretty snazzy fighter.
So, from the original premise of super-powered waitresses fighting each other to avoid getting stripped of their clothes, we somehow ended up with something that has deep characterisation (particularly for a fighting game series) and a quite respectable and intricate plot. Don't you love Japan?
This gallery is, I'm extremely confident, the best Variable Geo gallery available on the Net. However, there are no H pictures here, mostly because it is the non-H elements I like most about the series and think makes it special. Nonetheless, I think you'll enjoy it...if for no other reason than much of the art is VERY good, and despite not being (explicitly) naked, the girls still tend to be easy on the eyes.
(Oh, and just so you know, Chiho rules. I love my badass ninja girl, yes I do.)
